Merger: An agreement by shareholders and owners to bring both firms together under a common board of directors with shareholders from both sides owning shares in both businesses.

Takeover: When a company buys more than 50% of the shares in a company and becomes the controlling owner of it. (aquisition)

Synergy: Literally means that the whole is greater than the sum of parts, in intergration it is assumed that the intergrated company will be more successful than the formerly separate businesses.
