1. Learning Overview: Students must be able to critically evaluate the characteristics of Baroque music focusing on the various ornamentations used from composers including Bach, Handel and Henry Purcell

2. Learning Objectives: Student must be able to understand the characteristics of Baroque Music and period and focus on the various ornamentations used to prepare them for their experimentation unit in the IB Music Course

2.1. Differentiation: G & T (Gifted and Talented will compose 12 bar using various chord progressions, cadences and ornamentations) EAL (English as Additional Language) will understand the following keywords and describe them into their own words • Basso Continuo • Monophonic textures • Homophonic textures • Ternary Structure • Suspensions • Sequences • Terraced Dynamics

2.2. Context Personal Context: Music which the students are most familiar with following up on their Edexel GCSE Music experience and having studied Area of Study 1 Instrumental Music Local Context: Studying the music of Africa mixed with Baroque from local Gabonese artist. Global Context: The students will conclude music, which is unfamiliar and used to depict a place, society or culture

3. Researcher: They will research the Baroque Period (1600 – 1750) They will study the various composers associated focusing on Bach, Handel and Purcell They will include their findings in their journals They will list all the characteristics of the Baroque period focusing on: • Basso Continuo • Homophonic Textures • Cadences (Perfect, Imperfect, Interrupted and Plagal) • Complete the analysis for the following All students will prepare PowerPoint presentation using the suggested listening and choose from one of these three listed composers below

3.1. Task: Complete a PowerPoint presentation with 15 slides and include the following: Introduction: Your understanding of the Baroque Period Slide 3 – 9: Choose one of the composers below with suggested guided reading and complete a short analysis which is important to you and present into your slides with audio examples of the analysis, ornamentations and use of musical devices. Slide 13 – 14: Include pictures, listening examples of the area you researched in full depth with clear examples of analysis Slide 15: Resources and Ethnography (Please list all your research to ensure academic honesty

3.1.3.1. Assessment: • Formative: Group discussion, analysis, journal entries, evaluation on submitted research – PowerPoint presentation

4. Creator: Students will create a 32 bar composition using compositional devices from the Baroque period. Task: Compose music using the compositional devices used in the Baroque period (trills, upper and lower mordents, etc) • Orchestra for Chamber ensemble with a choice of your preferred instruments • Be creative and add interesting rhythms and use a suitable bass line, basso continuo or figured bass. • Use several chordal progressions (Primary and Secondary) Use of dominants and cadences encouraged. • Enhance counterpoint • Experiment with the melody make changes to the motifs

5. Performer: Students will perform pieces from the three suggested composers Task • Think of your solo performance and complete one performance from the suggested composers Bach, Handel and Purcell • Now think of some piece that seriously compliments your virtuoso as performer • Practice and prepare for recital to peers
