A mind map type is a specific visual structure (radial, hierarchical, spider, flow, cause-and-effect or comparison) that mirrors how you want your thinking to move on the page. Different types answer different questions and picking the right one is the first design choice, not the last. This article walks through the six mind map types you will actually use, with an example of each, guidance on picking the right one, and instructions on how to set each one up in MindMeister.

What makes one type of mind map different from another

Every mind map has a central subject and a set of relationships radiating from it. The type is the shape of those relationships. A classic radial mind map treats every branch as equal. A tree mind map ranks them from top to bottom. A flow mind map places them in order. A multi-flow mind map pairs each with its cause or its effect. Same medium, six very different questions it can answer.

Two dimensions decide which type fits your work:

  • How your ideas relate: equal siblings around a topic, a hierarchy from top to bottom, a sequence over time, or two options side by side?

  • What decision the mind map has to support: brainstorming has different needs than a process design or a pros-and-cons comparison.

Get the type wrong and even a well-drawn mind map slows the reader down. Get it right and the structure does half the work.

The visual approach itself has a long history: as Wikipedia's overview of the mind map summarises, branching diagrams have been used to organise knowledge since Porphyry of Tyros in the 3rd century, and were popularised in their modern form by Tony Buzan in the 1970s. What has changed is not the idea but the range of layouts the format now supports.

The 6 types of mind maps to know

The six types below cover the vast majority of real-world use cases. Each one earns its own section because each answers a different question about how information relates.

1. Classic radial mind map

The one most people picture when they hear "mind map". A central topic sits in the middle; primary branches radiate outward in every direction; sub-branches spread from each of those. Every top-level branch reads as equally weighted around the central idea, and the structure invites free association rather than ordering.

Best for open-ended brainstorming, planning a piece of writing, or capturing everything you know about a topic before organising it. A quick example: for a new product launch, the central node is "product launch"; primary branches are "audience", "positioning", "channels", "timeline", "team" and "risks"; each of those branches then spreads into specifics.

Where it falls down: a radial mind map is a poor choice for anything sequential or hierarchical, because every branch reads as equal weight and you lose ordering.

2. Tree or hierarchical mind map

Instead of radiating in every direction, a tree mind map reads top-down: a root node at the top, parent-child branches descending in strict hierarchy. Think of an org chart or the table of contents of a book. Every branch is subordinate to the one above it, and siblings at the same level share the same rank.

Best for organisational structures, taxonomies (types of animals, product categories, subject syllabuses), and any information with a clear parent-child relationship. A quick example: mapping a company with "CEO" at the top, "COO", "CFO", "CTO" and "CMO" as a second level, department heads under each C-level and team leads beneath them.

3. Spider or bubble mind map

Sits between the radial and tree forms. A single concept in the middle with short descriptive branches radiating outward, no hierarchy and no sequence. Common in classrooms as a "bubble mind map" for descriptive brainstorming, and equally useful in a product or marketing context for describing one thing in depth.

Best for describing a single subject with a set of attributes: a customer persona, a product, an audience segment, a character in a story. A quick example: a marketing persona with the central bubble reading "Marketing manager, mid-sized SaaS" and outer bubbles capturing traits ("time-poor", "budget-constrained"), needs ("dashboards, not reports") and preferences ("email over Slack for external comms").

Where it falls down: past roughly ten outer bubbles the mind map turns into a wordcloud. If you find yourself with fifteen attributes, group them into three or four themes and use the tree form instead.

4. Flow mind map

A sequence-oriented mind map. The central subject sits on the left, and branches move left to right through the steps or stages of a process. Sometimes called a chronology mind map or a process mind map, this is the form to reach for when order matters.

Best for documenting a process end to end, mapping a customer journey, or laying out steps toward a goal. A quick example: new-hire onboarding as "Day 1", then "Week 1", "Week 2", "Month 1" and "Month 3", each stage branching into the specific activities that belong to it.

5. Multi-flow mind map (cause and effect)

A cause-and-effect variant. The subject sits in the middle; causes radiate to the left, effects radiate to the right. Often used as a lightweight alternative to a formal fishbone diagram when you want to think through a situation before committing to a decision or a fix.

Best for understanding why something happens and what it triggers. Useful in retrospectives, incident analysis, and any decision where you want to see the second-order consequences. A quick example: central event reads "we missed the Q3 launch date"; causes on the left are "spec kept moving", "QA started too late", "designer left mid-project"; effects on the right are "one-quarter revenue delay", "sales team lost trust in dates" and "engineering morale dropped".

Where it falls down: with more than a handful of causes or effects, the mind map spreads too wide to read at a glance. Consolidate into themes before the branches multiply.

6. Comparison or double-bubble mind map

Two subjects side by side, with shared traits captured in the middle and unique traits radiating outward from each side. Related to a Venn diagram but easier to build in a mind mapping tool because it avoids geometric overlap.

Best for deciding between two options, comparing two customer segments, or contrasting two frameworks. A quick example: "kanban" versus "scrum", with shared traits in the centre (both agile, both use boards, both cap work in progress in practice), kanban-only traits on one side (continuous flow, no sprints) and scrum-only on the other (fixed sprints, defined ceremonies).

Where it falls down: the shared traits in the middle often carry the real insight. A comparison mind map that only lists differences becomes two separate lists that happen to share a page.

A note on concept maps

A concept map is a close relative but not the same thing. Concept maps use labelled arrows to describe the relationships between multiple concepts, and they often have more than one central node. How to pick the right type of mind map for your goal

Skip the type shopping and start with the question you need answered. The right type usually falls out of the answer.

  • Am I generating ideas or organising them? Generating goes with a classic radial or a spider mind map. Organising fits a tree or a comparison mind map.

  • Does the answer involve time or sequence? If yes, the flow mind map. If no, look elsewhere.

  • Does it involve why or what happens next? That is what the multi-flow mind map is built for.

  • Am I weighing two options? The comparison or double-bubble mind map.

The strongest signal: what would break the exercise? A radial mind map breaks a sequential process; a flow mind map breaks free brainstorming; a tree mind map breaks equal-weight ideation. Pick the type whose weakness is not fatal for the job in front of you. Common mistakes when picking a mind map type

The same six mistakes come up repeatedly, and all of them are fixable in the next mind map you draw.

  • Using a radial mind map for a process: ordering matters when steps depend on each other, and a radial mind map hides that order.

  • Using a tree mind map for brainstorming: hierarchies suppress ideas that don't fit the ranks.

  • Overloading a spider mind map: past ten outer bubbles it becomes a wordcloud; consolidate into themes.

  • Mixing types inside one mind map without labelling: if part of the mind map is hierarchical and part is radial, mark which is which. Otherwise the reader assumes it is all the same shape and misreads relationships.

  • Skipping the middle of a comparison mind map: the shared traits are often the interesting part; a comparison without them is just two side-by-side lists.

  • Redrawing when you should change type: if a mind map feels tangled, changing the type (radial to flow, or tree to comparison) usually fixes more than tweaking the branches.
