1. The Mohs hardness scale is a scale that helps identify the hardness or softness of a mineral. This is a scale of 1-10. Above is the Mohs Hardness Scale

2.2.1. Galena creates electronics

2.3. Silver

2.3.1. Silver creates jewelry

2.4. Corundum

2.4.1. Corundum creates jewelry

3. Mohs Hardness Scale

4. A mineral is a substance that are in rocks.

5. Someone that studies rocks, mineral, and other non-living things are called Geologists.

6. Rocks contain minerals.

6.1. Three types of rocks

6.2. Sedimentary

6.2.1. Sedimentary rocks are formed when the pressure of the layer on top of the plant material caused it to change into coal.

6.3. Igneous

6.3.1. Igneous rocks are formed when Magma cools. Igneous rocks have diamonds in them.

6.3.1.1. An example of igneous rock is Kimberlite

6.3.2. Metamorphic

6.3.2.1. The deeper layers are under more pressure, and are hotter than the surface. The high temperatures cause one rock to change to another.

6.3.2.1.1. An example of Metamorphic rock is Marble

7. Properties of Minerals

7.1. Color

7.1.1. The color of a mineral always varies. This doesn't often help identify the mineral.

7.2. Transparency- How light shines through the mineral (object)

7.2.1. Translucent,

7.2.1.1. Opaque

7.2.1.1.1. Transparent

7.2.1.1.2. Transparent if you can see through the mineral.

7.2.1.2. It is Opaque if you can't se through the mineral at all.

7.2.2. Translucent is if you can see through the mineral, but it is a blurry image.

7.3. Luster- How the mineral (object) reflects light

7.3.1. Brilliant

7.3.1.1. Glassy

7.3.1.1.1. Dull

7.3.1.1.2. Dull is if the mineral reflects no light, and isn't shiny.

7.3.1.2. Glassy is if the light reflects, but there is much shininess to it.

7.3.2. Brilliant is if the mineral is shiny, and reflects much light.

7.4. Crystal Shape- Shape of mineral

7.4.1. Octahedron

7.4.1.1. Cube

7.4.1.1.1. Tetrahedron

7.4.1.1.2. A Tetrahedron has 4 sides

7.4.1.2. A cube has 6 sides.

7.4.2. Octahedron is if the mineral has 8 sides, or is a cube.

7.5. Size

7.5.1. This is how big or small the mineral is. The size of a mineral varies.

7.6. Hardness compared to copper- This is a test to help identify minerals.

7.7. Hardness compared to glass- This is a test to help identify minerals.
